Is Television Really as a Drug

Focusing on Television's influence on public is the most challenging matter for scholars and sociologists nowadays. Because at the place where there are a lot of perception about Television it is difficult to come up with the right idea. For instance; according to Marie Winn; Television is accepted as a drug for societies. However; there also is controversy notion like that Television is tried to show people as a drug but the truth is not in that way. This idea is being supported with some aspect of Television and drug connection. Actually the scholars who defend that TV can not be a drug support their ideas with real drug and television connection. As a matter of fact; Drug conception is completely different than television conception for society and blaming television watchers as a drug users is unfortunately exaggerated and biased notion. Because drug addiction has an material and concrete meaning which Television has not. Therefore there is no connection with TV and Heroin in this way.
Moreover; Television covers a lot of time for a person's day. Hence; A connection is set up between the person and this device. For these reason; showing Television as a drug effects people deeply and the misunderstanding that people suppose themselves as a drug user often happens. In this environment, the relationship between drug and television stands at the argumentative position and it is challenging to deal with its accuracy.

  1. yes, it's all about perspectives, isn't it? different people look at the same phenomenon but assign it different meanings depending on their initial perspective... It's important that we are aware of the scholars' starting points so that we can analyze their arguments in relation to these perspectives and evaluate their explanations critically and come up with our own views on the issues.
